Fred Colwell has been building homes in the mountains of Western North Carolina for 15 years—from starter homes to $4 million spreads. He enjoys the challenge of working through new situations, keeping all the balls in the air at once. He understands the practicalities and possible pitfalls of building on mountainsides. He has previously built single-family, multi-family, and retirement facilities in Florida, and has consulted with developers on the design, engineering, roads and utilities infrastructure, construction, and resources to build out entire planned communities.
Perry Steinhoff has lived in Asheville for over five years. He has operated his own successful marketing business since 1989, helping clients across the country deliver the most relevant message, at the right time, to the people most interested in what’s being offered.
The two first met when Fred built Perry and his wife’s home in 2004. They were thrilled with the experience. One thing’s for sure: the builder and the client get to know one another very well over the course of the project—all the strengths and all the shortcomings.
Perry was impressed with Fred’s ability to juggle multiple activities, details, and contingencies, along with his steady, unflappable demeanor, his openness to actually working with (not just tolerating) the architect, his willingness to consider “off the wall” suggestions, his great follow-through on details, and how he keeps the client informed every step of the way. Fred was clearly not just another “pick-up truck” builder, nor was he in it for the fast buck. Customer delight was everything.
Early in 2005, they had an inkling that it might be great to work together to serve the needs of exacting clients who have enthusiasm to jump in and participate in the process. Each could bring great value to the equation: Fred could focus primarily on managing the process of building homes; Perry could get the word out to folks who’d appreciate it, and would work with prospective clients to identify their needs and help focus their dreams. So, they formed Great Circle Homes in order to leverage their abilities to serve many more clients than they could separately.
